Well hello there little babies!

See these?

They're kefir grains. Yes, I did just call my kefir grains little babies. I'm kind of attached to them. Just like I'm attached to my sourdough starter. I know, I know. But really, they do exciting things!!

I'll tell you a little more about kefir in a couple of days, but I wanted to wet your appetite by showing you one of the many things you can do with kefir.

You put your little grains into a jar, like so...add some milk, let it sit, and you get a yummy beverage filled with probiotics and good bacteria. Think yogurt...it's like yogurt, only better.

We do a lot of smoothies in our house. We've got our stand-by green smoothie, my husband's favorite pink smoothie, and our white smoothie. We love all of them and each of them offer great nutrition, in an extremely kid-friendly (and picky adult friendly) form.

White Smoothie
as named by my 2 1/2 year old
(recipe adapted from Kara)

1 cup kefir
1 frozen banana
1 tablespoon grade B maple syrup
1/2 heaping teaspoon vanilla
1/2 rounded teaspoon cinnamon
handful of beet greens, optional

Blend all ingredients together until mixed.
Makes 2 cups (Serves 2, or serves 4 small portions).

Here's my "White Smoothie" lover.
