Five years ago, my world started to tremble loose everything that no longer honored my highest truth. Through pain, I began to be opened to my soul - my true essence or my highest self.
My mentor taught me that when I am honoring myself, I am honoring everyone around me. False beliefs get in the way of that all too often. But when I really check in with my soul and I do things that lead me to that highest self, I am flooded with love and compassion.
It's easy to stay stuck in the old way of doing things. Some of the thoughts I have go like this:
- I don't want to let others down.
- People wouldn't like me if they knew the real me.
- Nobody wants to hear from me.
- I am not important.
- I need to be different or like so-and-so.
- If only I was more like this, then...
- If I don't make mistakes and I am perfect, I will be loved.
- "They" wouldn't understand.
Everyone has these types of thoughts - they may look different for different people - but we all have beliefs which keep us trapped. When we start to shed those beliefs, we can truly shine.
The first step in beginning to honor your soul, your true essence, your truest identity, or your highest self is to become aware.
What does it mean to live in a state of awareness?
The thing to know about awareness is that there is no judgment in awareness. That is really hard to do, by the way - spoken from the ever critical, self-judgmental Kami. But, when we can look at our actions, beliefs, expectations, and ideas - and do so from a place of utmost love and compassion - we become AWARE.
Louise Hay's work has been so instrumental in my healing. In her book, You Can Heal Your Life, she talks about awareness and how much we can learn by observing ourselves. She says the following in her book (which I encourage everyone to read!):
When I am aware, I can begin to change. I can see the patterns in my life that are no longer serving my soul or my highest self and I can eradicate them. I can shift into a higher way of living, a way of living that is bound to produce true, lasting joy and happiness. A way of living that is filled to the brim with love and compassion in every area.
As you strive to tap into your soul, start with becoming aware. Look long and hard at yourself (keep the focus on yourself, never on others). What do you see? What resistance are you meeting? You're looking at the best lesson for you at present.
Want to know mine? It seems easy, but it's not. SELF-ACCEPTANCE. One of my beliefs that keeps coming up through various experiences is the need for others to accept me and love me for who I am. But guess what? If I don't love and accept myself for who I am, it doesn't matter what anyone else does. I need to love and accept myself completely and wholly, because truly, nobody else matters. My soul knows this! Tapping into this knowledge I already have is the hard part. It is sifting through a lifetime of false beliefs and experiences.
I'll talk about affirmations at another time, but one of my new favorites that is just perfect for what I'm facing at the moment is this, learned from Danny + Mara at their Choose Happiness Retreat.
What is it in your life that is begging for your awareness? Where are you meeting resistance? Start noticing your thoughts and look at them without any judgment. That is the first step to honoring your highest truth!
